Anime Review: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable

Details: Released in 2016. Thirty-nine episodes, each episode is about twenty-three minutes long without commercials. Watched with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

Diamond is unbreakable is the fourth season of the Jojo’s Bizzarre Adventure anime. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a very popular, over the top anime that has a lot of action, a lot of comedy, and a lot of camp.

This fourth season takes place in 1999 in the town of Morioh. The story centers on the character of Josuke Higashikata, a high school student in Morioh. If you’ve kept up with the prior seasons, you’d know about “stands,” which are supernatural abilities/powers that some people seems to have. This season focuses on the people in Morioh who have these powers and the conflicts and problems that arise because of them.

Unlike the previous seasons where each episode fitted into an overarching plot line throughout the season, the structure of this season involve a number of independent stories that are loosely connected to one another. While these stories involve a wide range of eclectic characters and subject matter, they all generally involve the clash of one character’s supernatural powers versus the powers of another. These battles are some of the best parts of the series as they involve a lot of inner monologues, planning, and outsmarting one another. It sounds cliché, but this anime makes it work.

Part of what makes it work is the style employed. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure has a very distinct and well-known style. It is way over the top, to a hilarious degree. But it isn’t just the visuals, the narrative elements are also completely ridiculous. If I were to choose a few words to describe some of the characters, it would be innocent, naive, evil, macho, loyal, humiliated, and proud. I love this show’s style. I also love all the dumb poses they do.

Overall, Diamond Is Unbreakable is another season that continues along the themes and style of the prior seasons. There are obviously a lot of changes that have occurred throughout this anime, but it continues to keep my attention, get me fired up, and amuse me. I hope there is a fifth season and, if so, I greatly look forward to it.

Score: 8/10
