Movie Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Details: Released in 2017. Over two hours long. Stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem.

One of my deepest, darkest secrets is that I have enjoyed, perhaps even loved, every single movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Every. Single. One. I’ve enjoyed the predictable plot twists, the jokes, the action, the special effects, the pirates, and I’ve enjoyed Depp’s performances. You’d be hard pressed to find another franchise that so blatantly shows how an entire billion dollar franchise can rest upon one man, in this case Johnny Depp.  It’s a fun franchise and if you walk into the theater looking for some lighthearted fun, that’s what you usually get with these movies.

Dead Men Tell No Tales picks up five years after the last movie. A young man and a young woman with connections to the prior cast of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise seek to obtain the Trident of Poseiden and Jack and crew somehow join in on the adventure. There’s also another undead pirate crew who wants to kill Jack.

If you’ve seen other movies in the franchise, then you’ll know what to expect in this movie. A lot of the cast from the prior movies show up and take up their old roles. Acting isn’t going to win any Academy awards, but it fits the setting and after all these years, some of these actors are experts at these roles. There are even some surprise cameos that I didn’t expect to see.

One of the things that the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise does, perhaps better than almost any other franchise, is the special effects. There are some amazing special effects in this film as well as practical effects. There was one scene where they use horses to drag a house around and I was really curious how they did that, so I looked it up on YouTube. Turns out, they actually dragged a house around with horses. I think they put wheels on the bottom of the house, but it’s still pretty amazing. Expect some amazing visuals if you watch this movie.

Overall, it’s a fun adventure movie with lots of action. I enjoyed this movie as I’ve enjoyed every prior movie in this franchise.

Score: 7/10
