Fast Food Review: McDonald’s McRib

Score: 5.8/10

The McRib has come around again so I figured I’d give it a review.

I must confess, I don’t get the McRib. I don’t get why people like it. It’s certainly not the worst thing I’ve ever eaten, but I can’t say that it’s good either. And yet, a lot of people love it. I don’t get it.

The patty is essentially pieces of pork meet shaped into something that sort of resembles the shape or ribs. It’s then drenched in a heavy, tangy barbecue sauce with pickles and onions on top.

The patty is gross. It’s over processed pork meat and it tastes like it. The barbecue sauce is too heavy, like eating a bad of melted Jolly Ranchers. I love onions, but there were way too many raw onions here. It was just a lousy sandwich that costs too much (over $5 for me).

Overall, this was trash. I don’t get why people like it. It doesn’t taste good.

Fast Food Review: McDonald’s Guava and Creme Pie

Score: 7/10

A while ago, McDonald’s slightly changed the recipe to their apple pie and turned it into a worse version of itself. The portion somehow became less in that they found a way to skimp on the dough and thus made the pie flimsier. The structural integrity of the pie was compromise and pretty much fell apart in your hands. Since that change, I’ve avoided ordering the the apple pie.

Recently, while looking through desserts on their menu, I came across the guava and creme pie. I’ve never seen this item before and in fact, I don’t think it’s sold in most McDonald’s (maybe I’m wrong). In any case, I decided to give it a try and man, it’s pretty damn good.

Firstly, it has as much dough as the old version of McDonald’s apple pie, making it easy to hold and not fall apart in your hands. Increasing the amount of dough also increases the portion size, making for a more filling, satisfying pie.

As for the the filling, it’s a very pink, sweetened jelly filling with an equal amount of creme in it as well. Combined, it’s very good, though also very sweet.

Overall, this thing has made McDonald’s desserts worth ordering again. I don’t normally order it by itself though. The McDonald’s app in my area has a coupon where if you spend a dollar, you get a pie for free. I usually get a soda or a four piece nuggets and a free pie, of which is almost always going to be a guava and creme pie.

Fast Food Review: McDonald’s New Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Score: 7/10

McDonald’s has a lot of crispy chicken sandwiches and now they’ve come out with yet another. The New Crispy Chicken Sandwich is… amazing. It is damn good. I wanted to hate this thing, but it’s one of the best fast food chicken sandwiches out there.

You need to keep in mind that timing matters when it comes to food. How recently was it fried? Is it cold? Stuff like that has a big impact on taste. Your experience with the chicken sandwich may vary greatly from mine. But for me, this was amazing.

It wasn’t even that hot. It was slightly warm, but really juicy and really crispy. I wanted to get a spicy version, but the coupon I was using only allowed for the plain, which was still great. Even without sauce, I enjoyed this thing.

Overall, this is a great chicken sandwich. It’s priced in my area from around five to six dollars, which is about right when compared to competitors. It is on the same level as Popeye’s chicken sandwich in terms of taste, which is my favorite fast food chicken sandwich and a sandwich I place higher than Chil-Fil-A’s chicken sandwich. I’d buy this again, but only if I had a coupon lowering the price about one or two dollars.

Fast Food Review: McDonald’s Mighty Hot Sauce

Details: More information can be found at https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us.html

Score: 7/10

The last time I tried to get my hands on this sauce, they were sold out for weeks. I eventually tried to get this stuff again and was finally successful.

McDonald’s Mighty Hot Sauce is a hot sauce served specifically with their spicy chicken nuggets. I’m not entirely sure, but I think you can only get this stuff if you order spicy chicken nuggets. In any case, I ordered some spicy chicken nuggets and got this stuff too.

The most unique thing about this sauce is the sweetness. It’s a lot like McDonalds other spicy sauce, the sweet chili sauce. I looked at the ingredients and the sweetness comes mostly from apricots. Additionally, the sauce is much hotter than the sweet chili sauce. I don’t know if the sauce itself is very hot, the spicy nuggets are very hot, or the combination of the two was very hot, but it was pretty spicy for me (though I have a relatively low spice tolerance). It was so spicy, that the spice lingered and turned my Big Mac into a spicy Big Mac (which wouldn’t be a bad idea for future McDonald’s products). I think that’s a good thing, as there already are a lot of spicy fast food sauces. Making a spicy sauce that is substantially hotter than comparable fast food spicy sauces is a good idea and distinguishes McDonald’s. Of course, it is spicier only in my opinion. I wonder how other people who are more accustomed to spicy food will feel about it.

Overall, it a good sauce, but a not a good justification for ordering the spicy nuggets (I’ve reviewed the spicy nuggets in the past and basically feel that they are not worth it). If you can get the sauce with some regular nuggets, it’ll still be good.

Fast Food Review: McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Fish Sandwich

Details: More information can be found at https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/product/filet-o-fish.html

Score: 6.5/10

McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish is the kind of thing you’d expect to see served at an inner city public high school. It’s plain, frozen and fried. It’s a little depressing to look at because it’s just fish with cheese on bread. And yet I often order this… mostly because there are not any other cheap, non-beef options on the menu. Sometimes, I want fast food and I don’t want a burger. The Filet-O-Fish is the only real option on the menu.

Normally, this item costs over five dollars. Thankfully, recent deals have lowered the average price I pay for one of these things to about three dollars. Even then, I don’t think it’s that good. There’s nothing fresh on this thing. It’s a frozen fish patty they deep fried. I wish they’d put veggies on it, like Burger King does, but I realize a lot of customers might not like that. It’s also really small. It’s a tiny sandwich about the same size as a McDouble, except it’s fish so it’s less filling than beef… at least it feels that way.

Overall, I find this sandwich depressing. Every time I eat one of these, it’s because I’m too hungry, tired and lazy to think of something else to eat. Every time I finish eating a Filet-O-Fish, I obtain renewed determination to quit the trash that is fast food.
